Accessibility
The comfort and needs of our clients is very important to us, and we faced disappointing options when opening Mutiny. Our choices impact our clients, and we hope the information outlined here helps you to decide whether we are accessible to you.
If you need to see or experience the space to know if it’s accessible for you before booking an appointment, you’re welcome to stop by during our business hours. Email us to get the door code. If our space does not meet your accessibility needs, we are available to help reach out and find a salon that does.
Mobility
Our space is not wheelchair accessible. To get to our studio, there is one flight of stairs with a landing.
We do offer home haircuts for folks who we exclude from our space by being on the second floor. Unfortunately, home haircuts are harder on or bodies, and our capacity to offer them is very limited. Please email us at: queers@mutiny.gay to see if we are taking new home cut clients. At time of posting, we are not.
There are mats on the floor at the chairs for protecting the barbers’ bodies, and hair is slippery. Please walk with caution.
Smells
We are not a scent free space, but we do not use any chemicals, such as bleach or dyes.
We have a few unscented products and continually look for more.
Vision
If the lights at the mirror in front of you are too much, your barber can turn them off for the duration of the cut.
We have two large windows. We are not able to hang curtains or blinds per building regulations. We added tinted film to the panes to mitigate the harsh light.
We ask clients to take off their glasses during active hair cutting. Clients can put them back on during check ins.
Sound
We offer quiet cuts by request. This means your barber doesn’t talk to you except during the consultation and check ins.
Our studio is off a busy street. The above ground train goes by a block away.
We have sound dampening acoustic foam on the ceiling, but our shop can still get loud from our tools and voices. We have earplugs upon request.
Lex is hearing impaired - Please speak up if you’re in their chair.
It’s very rare for music to be playing in our shop, but if it is and it bothers you, we are happy to turn it off.
Size
Our chairs are rated for 600lbs. There are openings at the arm rests so bodies are less confined.
We have cushions if folks need more height in the chair or need them for comfort.
Capes
The cape can be as loose or tight around your neck as you like. We can also not use one if that’s your need.
Neurodivergence
We have fidget toys if needed.
All of us are neurodivergent in a variety of ways.
Kids
We do cut hair of consenting children. We must be able to communicate with the kiddo in some way, which can include the use of aids.
We have a great rec for a queer shop that specializes in kids cuts - Rockin’ Locks for Kids in Williamsburg.
Language
Alanis speaks English and Spanish.
Covid and other airborne awareness
We ask anyone in the space to wear a mask and provide KN95s in a box on our door if needed. Sometimes the person who picks up our laundry enters briefly without a mask. For full COVID protocols, click here.
We have limited capacity to do solo cuts in the shop for those who are high risk for COVID or have other reasons for needing lower sensory cuts. Email to schedule and please note that there will likely be wait times as we coordinate among barbers.
We will continue to add to this list and make adjustments to our space where we’re able. If you have specific needs we failed to address, let’s talk to see if we can accommodate you!
